Hikage
Sumino is a shy 8th Grader who is described as `plain`. The only friends she
has at the beginning of the series are the people who visit her blog. Hinata
becomes her first friend at her school, when he found her locked in a room, as
the class members had locked the soor behind them, not knowing that Hikage was
still inside. Hinata then tells her that he has `always looked at her`, since
he saw her get hit by a car to save a cat (As the driver claims he `only saw
the cat`) which touches Hikage, and becomes her friend, giving her support, and
noticing her when others do not.
Ever since she was little she has never been noticed (she
appears to be practically invisible in her class) as we see in a game of hide
and seek, where all the other children are found, but Hikage is left for hours,
until she finally gives up and goes home, crying. In a confrontation with Aya,
one of Hinata`s admirers, Hikage confesses her feelings to the class, who stand
up for her, and for the first time Hikage feels like a member of the class.
Until the confrontation only other friends (apart from
Hinata) are "MegaPIG" and "Black Rabbit", the only visitors
to her blog, where she goes by the name of `Himawari`. She doesn't seem to know
that Teru is Black Rabbit in her blog until later on when he tells her the
whole truth about him being Black Rabbit.
After she discovers this, Teru and Hinata have a fight over
Hikage, and both say she has to choose between the two. She leaves the
classroom and goes to her sunflower, which is about to bloom as she has
nurtured since the start of the manga, representing her growing confidence,
where she finds solace. Aya confronts her there and snaps the sunflower, but
afterwards confesses her lonliness. Hikage embraces her and apologizes for
making her lonely and Aya, shocked by Hikage`s kindness, leaves. Hinata and
Teru then find Hikage, where she thanks them, calling them her `two personal
suns` who have helped her to bloom, to which they reply `there is only one
sun`. Hikage then asks the two to make up, as they are both precious to her.
